- Unique-looking chassis
- Discrete graphics card
- Solid performance
- Some limited expandability
- Lacking USB 3.0 or eSATA
The Dell Inspiron 620 MT is a mid-line desktop computer that has a unique case, but it also has some good power to back up its looks. It has an Intel Core i5 processor, 6GB of RAM and discrete AMD graphics, which really helps this computer's performance. There are, however, some expandability issues that limit future upgrades.
The Dell 620 MT chassis measures 6.9 x 17.4 x 14.8-inches and weighs about 17.5-pounds and comes in many flashy colors. Besides black, there are four other colors ($29 extra): white, purple, red and blue. We really like the colors because they aren't quite the traditional blue or red and they are extremely vibrant. For users who want to save more space, there is also a slim tower option.
On the inside, you'll find a limited 300-watt power supply, which means you need to upgrade it if you want to make any significant upgrades. There are also only two RAM memory slots, which again limits upgrades because you'll need to leave out one or both of the two that come with the computer. There are, however, two free 1x PCI Express slots for future expansion.
External connectivity with the Dell Inspiron 620 MT includes 8 USB 2.0 ports (2 on front), HDMI-out, VGA-out, gigabit Ethernet, 5.1 audio jacks, headphone/microphone jacks and an 8-in-1 memory card reader on the front. Noticeably missing are the latest USB 3.0 ports, eSATA or FireWire inputs, but you can add one of more of these via the free PCI Express slots.
The internal specifications of the Dell Inspiron 620 MT that we reviewed includes an Intel Core i5-2310 2.9GHz CPU, 6GB of DDR3 memory, a 1TB 7200RPM hard drive, a tray-loading DVD-burner optical drive and 1GB AMD Radeon HD 6450 graphics. There is an available upgrade to a 1.5TB hard drive, a Blu-Ray optical disc drive and Nvidia GeForce GT 530 graphics. There's also built-in 802.11b/g/n wireless and Dell chose Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium (64-bit) as the operating system.
This desktop is on-par with most other similar desktop computers, but it does outperform in some areas, especially in graphics performance as some other desktops only have integrated graphics. Most users will find the performance of the Dell Inspiron 620 MT to be very good for multitasking, image/video editing, HD video watching and more. Because of the discrete AMD graphics with 1GB of dedicated memory, 3D gaming is possible with this computer, but nothing too extreme.
