The Dell UltraSharp U3014 is a 30-inch IPS display with LED backlighting, a 2560 x 1600-pixel resolution and excellent viewing angles. The overall image quality is extremely good and USB 3.0 connectivity makes this monitor even more impressive.

The design of the Dell U3014 is very sleek and minimal, which is something that most buyers will enjoy. The major of the exterior is matte-black, including the thin bezel, and a brushed-silver band encircles the monitor's perimeter. Because the screen is backlit by LEDs, the display is only 2-inches thick.

Dell includes a black rectangular base with a slightly curved edge. The mounting arm for the hinge has a few inches of height adjustment and tilt. The stand does swivel but one adjustment that is absent is pivot. Allowing pivot would have let you use the display is portrait orientation, which is useful for documents and Web surfing. At 30-inches, however, this is probably a feature that wouldn't work as well but some of Dell's 27-inch monitors do have pivot rotation.

On the right bezel, there are five touch buttons that are proximity sensitive, so they work just by touch (or even an almost touch). When you activate a button, they all light up and an on-screen label appears to help.

For ports, the Dell U3014 offers one HDMI-input, a full-size DisplayPort, a mini-DisplayPort, and a dual-link DVI input. The DisplayPort can be used for MST (Multi-Stream Transport), which lets you connect multiple monitors through a daisy-chain setup. There are also five USB 3.0 ports (one for upstream, the rest for downstream), a 6-in-1 card reader on the left side, audio output jacks and a port for the optional Dell Soundbar attachment. We really like that Dell went for the faster USB 3.0 instead of the older 2.0 spec and the built-in memory card reader is a rarity for a monitor.

The 30-inch display is an IPS (In-Plane Switching) display that delivers excellent black levels as well as color accuracy. In our subjective tests, we found the colors to be very vibrant and while watching fast-moving HD video, the speedy refresh rate provided no visible ghosting. Viewing angles were extremely wide thanks to the IPS display technology.
