Samsung has always been one of the top LCD monitor makers and one of their latest models, the SyncMaster 2233SW is a 22-inch 16:9 wide screen display that offers full HD resolution at 1920 x 1080. The sleek design and good image quality make it an excellent contender if you're looking for a new display.
The design of the Samsung SyncMaster 2233SW is the same as all similar SyncMaster LCDs from Samsung: sleek black with a glossy black finish for the display bezel and stand. The display itself is only 2.8-inches thick at its thickest point and all of the controls and power button are located on the side of the display. There are no speakers included in this display and on the back are VGA and DVI inputs, but no HDMI. The stand allows for pivoting the monitor back and forward for minor adjustments, but it should be placed as close to eye level as possible. There is no vertical adjustment allowed by the stand, however, but this is common with Samsung's latest SyncMaster monitors.
As stated in the intro, this monitor has a native HD resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels and measures 21.5-inches with 16:9 widescreen aspect ratio. The contrast ratio is 15000:1, which means it shows deep blacks and vibrant whites. The colors displayed are extremely vibrant and the picture looked fantastic under regular conditions. The widescreen aspect ratio allows for users to have a lot of screen "real estate", which means you can have many different windows open at once and see them simultaneously too. We also should mention that the display itself is non-glossy, which is much better for conditions where there are overhead lights that would otherwise create glare on a glossy display.
The on-screen menu is activated from one of the buttons on the right-side of the monitor and you have the usual options, like brightness, contrast, etc. There's also a setting called MagicBright, which lets you choose a few custom settings: Internet, Gaming, Text, and Custom. The menus themselves are extremely easy to navigate, unlike some other menus on other monitors. Looking at text on this monitor appeared extremely crisp and colors were accurate and vibrant.
When viewing fast-moving content, there is no visible streaking or fragments due to any lagging response time. The Samsung SyncMaster 2233SW features a 5 millisecond response time, which means the pixels are able to quickly refresh to display moving objects with clear edges. Gaming also looks very good on this monitor, even fast-moving 3D games.
One thing we were disappointed with is the lack of a HDMI input since Samsung advertises this monitor as "full HD". It can, as we said, display the HD resolution of 1920x1080 natively, but it isn't true high-definition without using HDMI as your input.
