Windows 7 Box Sales Up 234 Percent Compared to Vista

Since the anxiously awaited debut of Microsoft’s Windows 7 operating system, the Microsoft team has spent a deal of time airing ads which really show off the prowess of their new system release. These commercials have a good correlation to their reviews and their sales numbers are very impressive. According to NPD Group, Windows 7′s boxed sales during their week of debut were up 234 percent compared to Windows Vista. However due to the increased of discounts for students and those interested in upgrades for the season coming up, the dollar sales were only up 82 percent. Total Windows PC Sales – which include all operating systems – were up 49% year-over-year whereas when Vista launched it was 69 percent. In relation to the prior week of launching, sale were up 95% for Windows PCs versus a 170 percent sale for Vista in 2007.

“A combination of factors impacted Windows 7 PC sales at the outset, but the trajectory of overall PC sales is very strong leading into the holiday season,” said NPD Stephen Baker, NPD’s vice president of industry analysis.

Microsoft’s Brandon LeBlanc posted on the Windows Team Blog, “It has been quite amazing to watch the global excitement build around Windows 7, especially during a tough economic climate. It was just a few short weeks ago that we learned about Windows 7 outselling the UK’s “own” Harry Potter. In Japan, anxious PC users waited in line to be one of the first to get their hands on Windows 7.”
