Verizon Wireless said it was investigating another outage within its LTE network on Wednesday, with customers from all over the nation reporting that they were without 4G service.
Verizon acknowledged the outage via its Twitter account. "VZW is investigating customer issues in connecting to the 4G LTE data network," the company said. "3G data, voice and text services are operating reliably."
A spokeswoman for Verizon Wireless said that she could not say what areas had been affected. As of 9:54 AM PT, another VZW spokesman said that the issues had been resolved. "After a brief issue this morning, 4G LTE service is fully restored," he said via email.
As Bloomberg noted, however, a small number of Verizon customers began posting to Verizon's customer forums, complaining of being without service. As of press time, those areas included Detroit, Mich.; Phoenix, Ariz.; Columbus, Ohio; plus areas in northern Virginia and the suburbs of Chicago.
Although Verizon seems to be have survived January without an LTE outage, the company experienced three outages in December: on Dec. 7, Dec. 21, and on Dec. 28. The company has not said what caused the outages.
"Being a pioneer comes with growing pains," Verizon said in a statement at the end of December. "The recent issues that affected our customers' 4G LTE service were unforeseen despite careful, diligent planning, deployment and ongoing upgrade programs."
PCMag gave the network high praise during our 2011 Fastest Mobile Networks test: "We found that Verizon's new 4G LTE network is much faster than other mobile Web options, with speeds that often exceed home Internet connections," PCMag analysts concluded.
Verizon's messaging, however, may be quietly backing away from statements that once positioned itself as not only the fastest but the most reliable wireless network nationwide.
While the company's "It's the Network" page claims that "Verizon Wireless has the nation’s fastest, most reliable 4G network," a separate Verizon page on the "The Best Network" uses more conservative language. "Verizon Wireless operates the nation's largest 4G LTE network and largest, most reliable 3G network," that page says.
