Microsoft Patches Office for Mac Service Pack 2 Bug

Microsoft this week issued a patch for Office for Mac 2011 Service Pack 2 (SP2), which was causing problems for a select group of users on Outlook.

The fix, known as 14.2.1, "fixes a number of issues, including the Outlook for Mac database issue," Microsoft said in a blog post.

Earlier this month, Microsoft removed Office for Mac SP2 from its automatic update cycle after some users "experienced issues related to corrupted databases."

After installing Office for Mac SP2, some users trying to launch Outlook received a message that said "Please upgrade the Office database." As reported on the company's forums, those who opted to upgrade, however, were met with more error messages.

Microsoft said its update is "primarily preventative" and targeted at those who have not yet installed SP2, but the company urged all users to run the update. Glitches aside, Redmond said SP2 "improves database resiliency and detects inconsistencies that went unnoticed prior to this release."

As ZDNet noted, meanwhile, Microsoft also reissued and updated its Lync for Mac 2011 update.
