The T-Mobile HTC Touch Pro2 has been a fairly popular phone that performs really well and has a large touch screen, a QWERTY keyboard, and multimedia features. The new Sprint version of the Touch Pro2 offers other features, including a headphone jack and updated software.
The size of the HTC Touch Pro2 from Sprint is exactly the same as the T-Mobile version, measuring 2.3 x 4.6 x 0.7-inches (whd) and weighs just over 6 ounces. The phone is the perfect size for a pocket and works comfortably in almost all hand sizes. It has a gray colored body that looks both professional and sleek. The 3.6-inch 800x400 pixel touch screen is beautiful and is a resistive touch screen and is not multi-touch. The whole screen slides to the side and slightly tilts upward to reveal the five-row QWERTY keyboard. It works very nicely, even for users with larger thumbs. The physical keyboard is nice to have as some users do not like “soft” keyboards (which are keyboards displayed on the screen). The only noticeable change from the T-Mobile branded Touch Pro2 is the change in location of the microSD slot, which is now beneath the back cover, but not under the battery.
The Sprint HTC Touch Pro2 is powered by Microsoft’s Windows Mobile 6.1 operating system, which is not the latest version as 6.5 is beginning to appear on a few phones. Sprint has designed a few home screens to mask some of 6.1’s “ugliness” that some users complain about. Sprint also chose to remove Internet Explorer Mobile, which has an awful reputation, and replace it with Opera Mobile 9.5. Sprint also used some of HTC’s custom interface enhancements to replace the Windows Start menu and all settings screens with more fancy, better-designed layouts. Despite these improvements, Windows Mobile has been known to hinder the performance of many mobile phones because of the "clunkiness" of the software. Performance can be slow sometimes when opening large applications or while running multiple programs, but the 528MHz processor keeps things moving usually.
Other software that comes with the HTC Touch Pro2 on Sprint’s network include Office Mobile, a PDF reader, IM clients (AIM, Yahoo!, & Microsoft Messenger), Sprint Streaming TV, Sprint Music Store, and a few sport’s related applications. Jetcet’s printing applications also is included, which allow printing to Bluetooth enabled printers. Sprint includes their GPS navigation application, which for a monthly fee, allows for unlimited turn-by-turn guided GPS navigation. We recommend that you install a free program, like Google Maps Mobile, instead.
The Touch Pro2 also comes with Windows Media Player pre-installed, which allows for the playback of 640x480 pixel videos and unencrypted MP3, AAC, and WMA audio files. The digital camera (more on this later) can also capture video at 20 fps and at a resolution of 352x288 pixels. They can be saved in one of three formats: MPEG4, H.263, and H.264.
The Sprint HTC Touch Pro2 has a Qualcomm MSM 7200 528MHz processor and 288MB of memory with around 220MB of it available for user use. As we mentioned before, there is a microSD slot underneath the back cover for expanding the device’s memory. This phone also has WLAN built-in with support for 802.11b/g and Bluetooth. There is also a 3.2 megapixel digital camera with autofocus and no flash built-into the back of the phone. Sprint decided to also include a standard headphone jack on their version of this phone too. The Touch Pro2 is a quad-band world phone supporting GSM 850, 900, 1800, and 1900 and works with Sprint’s EDGE and 3G wireless broadband networks. The 1500mAh battery is rated at allowing just under 7 hours of talk time and 18 days of standby time.
