Motorola Droid Preview PDF Print E-mail

The Motorola Droid has surfaced and it has been rumored to be an 'iPhone Killer' and in this preview, we will run down the features of the Droid. The Droid will be a Verizon Wireless-only device in the United States and will run Google's new Android 2.0 mobile operating system.

The Droid, built by Motorola, is built very sleek and features a large 3.7-inch WVGA touch screen with a full slide-out QWERTY keyboard and a navigation pad. The 854-pixel wide screen has more than 400,000 pixels total to allow for less scrolling when viewing Web pages. Because of this, the Droid will have a fully-featured Web browser similar to the iPhone's Safari, which lets users view the Internet just as they would on their regular computer. The device itself measures about 4.5 x 2.4 x 0.5-inches and is quite heavy, weighing in at just under 6 ounces.

Under the touch screen, there are four "touch buttons", which are not really buttons, but rather touch-sensitive buttons. These four buttons include: Back, Home, Search, and Menu. These are useful for performing tasks like bringing up the search feature and getting back to the home screen quickly. Because they are touch-sensitive, they are activated rather easily by mistake.

This new device also comes loaded with Google's Android 2.0 mobile operating system, which has received mostly positive reviews since version 1.0 was released a few months ago. The touch screen is capacitive, which means it is multi-touch enabled and uses similar multi-touch motions the iPhone uses, such has pinch to zoom out and swipe to move back and forth. There's also a built-in accelerometer that adjusts the orientation of the display automatically, but unlike the iPhone, this can be disabled.

The Droid will be available from Verizon Wireless on November 6th for $199 after a $100 mail-in rebate and a new two-year agreement.
