Apple's hugely-hyped iPhone officially goes on sale today at 6PM EST. The iPhone has been talked about all over the media and in the blogosphere and with that talk comes both criticism and praise. Apple has said that it is industry-changing and will be the biggest thing they've ever made, but skeptics are unsure if it will take off as everyone hopes. There isn't any doubt in anyone's mind that Apple has captured the attention of millions worldwide with this one, very small device.
For those of you who don't know much about the Apple iPhone; it's a cell phone, PDA, and an iPod combined with some awesome features, such as a huge 3.5-inch touch screen with a touch keyboard. It's a quad-band GSM phone from AT&T and uses the EDGE network or 802.11b/g WiFi for Internet connectivity. The iPhone, as we said, is also a widescreen iPod when flipped horizontally (for which the iPhone automatically detects its orientation and rotates the screen accordingly) and allows users to sync their iTunes music library to it. There is also Bluetooth built-in and a 2 megapixel digital camera. The iPhone comes in two models with different storage capacities, 4GB and 8GB, selling at $499 and $599, respectively.
The iPhone actually runs a mobile version of Mac OS X operating system, which allows for Safari to be used for Web browsing and unique photo browsing complete with interactive zoom and slideshow functionality. Apple has announced that it will be including several applications with the iPhone, one includes support for viewing YouTube videos via the Web. There is also support for Google Maps, e-mail, calendar syncing, and contact storage. The iPhone will sync with Apple iTunes 7.3 (which was also released today).
There's no doubt that there will be people who will absolutely love this phone to death, but as people begin to buy them, we may hear of problems and functionality issues, but that's pretty much with every new device these days. There's also no doubt that this phone will remain in the media spot light, both on and offline for days and weeks to come. You have to commend Apple for producing a product that has attracted so much attention among such a diverse group of people.
