PCWorld posted a news article talking about a poll showing that teens' holiday wish lists this year is topped off with the Apple iPhone, especially among 13 to 25-year-olds in the United States. I found this to be very amusing, but also not surprising at all. The iPhone has been all the rage since it came out earlier this year and will continue to be despite all its shortcomings. I think it's amazing that people won't think a second before dropping $400-500 on an iPhone when they could spend half that and get a better phone. From all the wireless carriers, you can get a very nice smartphone for under $250. I personally recommend any of the Palm Treo line of phones as well as either the Samsung Blackjack I or Blackjack II (which just came out by the way). The iPhone a decent keyboard, MMS messaging, and 3rd party applications. Today's smartphones all pretty much have a decent QWERTY keyboard that is comfortable to use and works nicely and many users of the iPhone complain about the on-screen touch keyboard. As an owner of an iPod Touch, I can definitely relate to that.

My phone that I use, the original Blackjack, is fantastic when it comes to 3rd party applications because of it's Windows Mobile 6 (I loaded the hacked WM6 ROM from the Internet) operating system. There are plenty of applications available for download online for Windows Mobile and Palm OS phones. Now you can load 3rd party applications onto the iPhone, but you have to "jailbreak" it, which makes it so you cannot get new software upgrades as Apple releases them, but you have to wait to get hacked versions from software modders online.

I know the iPhone is all about the hype and status symbol, but I personally opted to not get an iPhone and instead get a Samsung smartphone, the Blackjack, for two reasons. The first reason was the physical keyboard and the other reason was the better data and calling plan I could get with the Blackjack. I know there will always be people who will buy the iPhone...and that's totally OK and I applaud them, but when people blindly spend their money to get a phone just because of the hype and not the facts, that worries me.
