Seagate is best known for their hard drives and now they are really starting to push their new line of external backup hard drives. These new Seagate Pushbutton Backup Drives come in various capacities, starting at 200GB and all the way up to 750GB. For this review, we are reviewing the 200GB model because we feel that it is a good size capacity for the usual computer user. To start off, the Seagate Pushbutton Backup Drive isn't as bulky as some of the other external backup drives are. They will fit snugly onto anyone desk without taking up crucial desk space. The Seagate Backup Drive measures approximately 7 x 6.5 x 2-inches and it weighs a very light 2.8 pounds. Backup drives are becoming more and more popular these days because of their uses. Today, many offices and even home users are starting to buy more and more of these external backup drives. People buy them to backup their important data files, such as financial documents, pictures, e-mails, and virtually anything else on your computer that you want to have saved in case of a virus or catastrophic hardware failure. To use the Seagate Pushbutton Backup Drive, just press the backup button on the front of the device and the included software program, called BounceBack, will pop-up on your computer and start doing a backup of your pre-selected files and folders. The program is a little clunky at first use, but you get used to it after a few uses. What is really nice about the drive is that it doesn't backup each file each time, instead, it only backs up everything once and then updates files on the backup as they change on your computer's drive. This allows for much quicker daily backups. The connection options with the Seagate Pushbutton Backup Drive are USB 2.0 and Firewire 400. Either one will get you lightning-fast performance, so go with whatever you have open on the back of your computer. In testing, it took about 4 hours to transfer just under 30GB of files from the computer to the Seagate Pushbutton, which is a little slow in comparison to external backup drives, but certainly not terrible. However, it was way ahead of the competition when it came to read times (moving files from the Seagate Pushbutton to the computer). To transfer that same 30GB data back to the computer, it took only 23 minutes. In conclusion, the 200GB Seagate Pushbutton Backup Drive puts an enormous amount of backup capacity at your fingertips. It allows anyone to completely backup their important data files, such as digital photos, MP3's, financial documents, and virtually anything on their computer. It's a great asset for businesses that store a lot of data that cannot easily be recovered in case of data loss. For the amount of storage that you get, the price is right on target too. |
