Palm has unveiled its first Palm Treo PDA with the Microsoft Windows Mobile 5 operating system. It has been a long awaited device and it's finally here and available to Verizon customers plus some other providers. From what we've seen from this hot new device is quite promising. Check out this preview of the Palm Treo 700w to see what it's all about.
Like other Palm Treo models, the 700w has the same general layout and external design. The
entire device measures about 4.5 x 2.5 x 1-inches and weighs a little heavier than previous models at a total of about 6.5 ounces. The Treo 700w has the usual color design, the dark gray and metal-looking gray two-toned tough-looking outer shell.
The screen on the Treo 700w is basically the same as past models, but it is a little less hefty on the resolution. The 700w's LCD screen has 240x240-pixel resolution, again a little less than the Treo 750's 320x320-pixel's. Despite the lowered resolution, you can't notice too much a problem with it. Below the screen, you still have the standard navigation buttons, including Today, Talk, End, OK, Start, and a 4-way navigation toggle button. This great button layout make the Treo 700w very easy to use with or without the stylus.
Under the above mentioned navigation buttons is the standard QWERTY keyboard. Users with bigger than average fingers might have a slight problem using this keyboard, but it isn't a major factor or downside. What is even cooler is that the keyboard is backlit for that nighttime e-mail writing. At the top of the device, is the MMC/SDIO expansion card slot, ringer silent/on switch, and the infrared port. On the bottom of the Treo 700w, is where the headset jack and MultiConnector port. Other features of the 700w include a pretty good speaker, removable battery, and a 1.3-megapixel digital camera.
As we stated earlier in the preview, the Treo 700w comes with the Microsoft Windows Mobile 5 operating system. Also included is the new Microsoft Mobile Office suite that includes the mobile versions of Word, Outlook, Excel, and PowerPoint. New with Outlook is that you can receive mail from POP3 and IMAP4 accounts, which means Yahoo and Hotmail accounts are now supported.
You also get Windows Media Player Mobile 10, which lets you play MP3, WAV, WMA, and other media file-formats. There is also Bluetooth connectivity, but still no built-in Wi-Fi connectivity, but you can use the external Palm Wi-Fi expansion card. There's 128MB of memory in the 700w, but only 60MB of that is user-accessible. You can, however, use memory cards with the 700w's expansion slot.
Call quality with the 700w is pretty good and it's rated for 4.7 hours of talk time and 15 hours of standby time. Generally, the Treo 700w operated smoothly, probably thanks to its 312MHz Intel XScale CPU. There was no noticed lag or slowness when opening e-mails or surfing the Internet.
