Microsoft has released yet another update to one of its ever-popular programs. This time it's the new Windows Media Player 11 (WMP11) that's full of new kicks and features. It's interface has been completely re-done and new elements have been added to WMP11.

Probably the first thing that regular users of Windows Media Player will see different when they first see WMP11 is the re-designed interface. The new interface features the "glassy" look that all of Microsoft's new software products have, such as Internet Explorer 7 beta and Office 2007 beta 2. They are all matching the upcoming Windows Vista operating system. The new interface features a new black glossy texture that gives WMP11 a sort of dark look, but it definately looks better than the old traditional blue interface seen on WMP10 and 9. At the top of the player, you'll see the familiar Now Playing, Library, Rip, Burn, and Sync buttons. One thing new with these toolbar buttons is that now they have a subtile drop-down box under them that revel a whole bunch of options and features. These small menu's effectively hide features that are not commonly used, therefore dramatically free up and unclutter WMP11's general interface, which makes it a lot more friendlier to use. Like WMP10, version 11 hides its menu system, now called the Classic Menu. You can access the Classic Menu if you want by right-clicking on any area of the top menu area and it will appear.

WMP11's New Interface
Windows Media Player 11's new black "glass-like" interface that is uncluttered and easy to use.

Besides the general interface, Microsoft has also improved on the way users can browse, sort, and view their music and photo galleries using Windows Media Player 11. In pervious version of WMP, the music library was just a long list of text that is a lot like what Apple's iTunes uses. Well now with WMP11, the view is far more graphical complete with icons featuring album art in all of the main library view styles, including Artist, Album, Genre, Title, and Year. This is a huge improvement and allows you to locate your music a lot quicker than hunting through a long list of text.

WMP11's Music Library View
WMP11 features a new way to look at your music library. Now you can see their actual album art and other graphical representations.

Like WMP10, WMP11 works with photos and videos as well as music. However, WMP11 hides the difficulty of working with these two media types by hiding photos and videos by default. To access photos and videos, you have to click the new Categories button, which then provides a bread crumb trail, similar to the Windows Explorer Address bar, that shows "where" you are in the whole media library.

WMP11 Picture Viewing
Windows Media Player 11 provides the ability to view photos, similar to the way that WMP10 did. However, in WMP11 you access the feature a little differently.

With WMP10, Microsoft included a ton of included online media services with Media Player. These services all still work in WMP11 with an extra download, but this time, Napster, FYE, and even MSN Music are no longer included in the default download of WMP11 and instead only includes MTV's new URGE service, which Microsoft is touting as future of online music downloads in its continued fight against Apple's iTunes Music Store. In our short time using MTV's URGE with WMP11, we've concluded that it doesn't even compare to Apple iTunes. It just doesn't offer the features nor the selection.

MTV URGE
MTV's new URGE online music library is the only online music service included with WMP11.

You can now sync with smaller devices using a new Shuffle Sync feature that is just like a feature in iTunes that Apple introduced with the iPod shuffle. With the new Multi-PC Sync, you can sync a single device between two or more computers. As with past Windows Media Player versions, you still cannot sync with the Apple iPod, which will turn away a lot of MP3 player users from switching to WMP11. There are many WMA-based online music stores that you can connect to with WMP 11, but none impress us or consumers as much as Apple's iTunes.

In conclusion, I see Windows Media Player 11 as a big improvement over past versions, in terms of both the interface and the features. There are still a few quirks that make us wonder if it will really convince loyal users of other music programs to switch to WMP11. For regular users of Windows Media Player, you'll definately want to update to this new version. You'll really be happy with it.

You can download Windows Media Player 11 free at Download.com.

I think WMP11 is inconsistent with the interface design. From the windows XP interface to going into this 'black' media player. Look how streamlined mac is???

Note that WMP11 is in its beta stage. It may (or may not) have a feature added to it in which a user can change its skin. And if anything, you may still revert to version 10 (not only because it's stable but because it fits more properly with the Windows Media Center and XP interfaces).

Also, I have a good feeling that WMP11's interface was truly meant to coincide with that ofMicrosoft's upcoming OS, the Windows Vista. With that in mind, WMP11's visual appearance makes much more sense.

How can I set the DEFAULT for Device Sync quality to NOT convert all my MP3's to WMA? Every time I plug in a memory card or player, It defaults to converting (waste of time). I just want to sync my MP3's directly to my devices. That's all.

written by Tim on June 20, 2006

I like everything about WMP11 except the fact that I can't see the album reviews that were front and center in WMP10. This one missing feature will make me go back to 10.

Falls short of freeware
written by utinfo on June 24, 2006

Microsoft just does not understand how important it is for large collections to be able to have the application identfy the albums/tracks. At best this is a tedious time consuming task that is musch easier within Freeware applications. Microsoft go back to the drawing board.

Not playing some mp3s
written by Johnny on July 9, 2006

It looks great, plays great, but where are my songs? Media library skips some mp3s and when I try to play them manualy it says: "Windows Media Player cannot play the file. The Player might not support the file type or might not support the codec that was used to compress the file.". It's normal mp3 encoded with LAME, why doesn't it work? Winamp plays them all, but it's not good enough with large collections and portables as new WMP. I hope it will be fixed in final version.

I noticed WMP11 would not play the wma songs that I had priviously downloaded using WMP10 from Wal-Mart. The problem was with DRM. After working for hours with Wal-Mart's tech support and trying several recommended fixes from Microsoft, I eventually had to roll back to WMP10 to get the songs to play again. I don't think I'll go back to WMP11 until all bugs are fixed.

Piece of Junk
written by John on February 4, 2007

Slow. Available on-line stores are a joke. White background makes scroll bars almost invisible. Don't need all the blank space between each artist "grouping" (just a straight DB/flat file look is way more efficient). I could go on-and-on. WMP10 w/MSN music was great -- but I realize they had to reserve MSN music for the Zune ecosystem. So, I buy less on-line and I am going to load another player. Typical half-baked Microsoft garbage.

wmp 11 library sucks. i mean its good that it automatically gets album art from the internet, but its not as great. it doesnt show the song currently playing. and when u close and open wmp it starts from afresh. in wmp 10, after u opened it, it showed the song u played last time before closing it. not anymore in 11. i tried to rollback to 10, but keep getting error. so i m stuck with this piece-o-shit player.

written by Scott on February 10, 2007

I don't like the new WMP v11 Library interface AT ALL. Is there any way to get back to the text view, or are you always stuck with the album art stack? Graphical is NOT better. The new view would be fine if I didn't have much stuff, but I have over 1500 CDs in my library and now I can only view a handful of things at a time. It takes forever to scroll through these huge icons to browse the Library. Fortunately, I created a Windows Restore Point before I downloaded the upgrade and was able to go back to v10. Actually, the best organizational program I've found is the old MusicMatch v10, but it tends to be "twitchy" and locks up my machine periodically. Any other good suggestions?

doesn't accomidate multi-disc albums??/
written by Kirkus on March 6, 2007

I have many multiple disc albums. In iTunes you can sort by disc number then track number... not the case in WMP11.... which means the track order is 1,1,2,2,3,3 etc instead of 1,2,3,1,2,3 etc.

Why can't you delete songs from the playlist and your computer from within the media player like you were able to do in older versions of media player. Like others posted I would like to be able to view text only. This is one of the most frustrating so called improvements ever, well besides the critically aclaimed vista. How much do they pay those reviewers. Pure crap.

Junk
written by Scott Smith on March 20, 2007

Looked pretty good at first. Doesn't work worth a darn, Firefox plugin doesn't work either. Doesn't seem to work on XP very well.

I gave up on it. I'm just using VLC for Windows. I hope Amarok starts getting ported to Windows again. It boggles my mind that so many sites require what I believe is the worst media player ever created. Do they want people to use their stuff? It's no mystery why online radio has been slow in coming. The only sites worth bothering with are the ones streaming good old MP3. The ones that support Windows Media Player usually waste your time.

Many of my songs in the library under the various albums are totally different from their listed name. WMP has jumbled half of my music library with names not matching songs! I have windows xp pro and media player 11 was installed without me realizing what kind of media player update I was getting. I am very upset about this because I just thought it was an important security update and now my media player is ruined so far in that I have not been able to get it to function; not even the internet radio which is what I was most interested in. I now am trying to get it uninstalled and it has been a nightmare! I am extremely upset about this and I would not recommend this version of the player! Stick with 9 or 10 especially if you are not having any problems. Sometimes the "grass isn't greener on the other side!" images/tongue.gif

i think the new windows media player 11 is one of the best things windows have done in a long time... once you get to know how it works i think you will be very impressed by it's functionality. Im a big lover of the mac's and sometimes my opinion is one sided towards the mac's but i honestly thing that this media player is the best one currently out. i have not come across any problems with it yet and in response to

"Microsoft just does not understand how important it is for large collections to be able to have the application identfy the albums/tracks. At best this is a tedious time consuming task that is musch easier within Freeware applications. Microsoft go back to the drawing board."

if you only gave this program a chance you would realise that it can identify the album, tracks, artist and even the composer. i have thousands of songs in my collection and now i can browse visually through the library or switch back to the listed veiw or get a combination of both.

take your time to learn how it works... i think you will realise its much better than you think. It breaks my heart to say it as a mac lover! :'(

I just got my Windows Media Player 9 back and I have to thank the Microsoft techs for their patience with me. I had 11 version and was not at all happy with player.! What a headache it was to figure out and the radio stations weren't on the player. You had to agree to use URGE which I wasn't comfortable having to do to get radio through the player. Definitly not "user friendly." Any way I'm happy now and again "thanks, big time to the Microsoft techs!" images/grin.gif

Streaming inernet radio
written by Debbie Hepler on April 20, 2007

To PC GUY:
Hi. I had this same issue and was unhappy with WMP11. I uninstalled it and reverted back to WMP 9. There are so many great stations available with that player. That is what I would suggest that you do. In the mean time you can still listen to streaming radio but you have to know a particular radio station and go to that web site. Try 1.FM. There are several genres of music to choose from. You will have to revert back to at least WMP 9 to be able to control the stations through the player. Check it out and see what you think. Good-luck, I hope I've been helpful!! images/wink.gif

written by MD on April 23, 2007

First, I never do automatic updates. I always pick and choose what I want and I made sure never to update my MediaPlayer since I only use it for listening to the radio online. Suddenly, after downloading my security updates from microsoft, I have MediaPlayer11. So, I uninstall it(both programs), go to download MediaPlayer9, and it tells me Ican't do it because I have a newer version already installed on my pc. I keep trying to uninstall it. Tells meit's uninstalled, only to find out it still exists on my pc. HOW DO I GET THIS OFF MY PC?????

Suggestion for MD ( April 23)
written by Debbie Hepler on April 24, 2007

Hi MD, Your story sounds exactly like mine. What I had to do (with the help of Microsoft techs)was to do a 'system restore' to about a day or two before WMP 11 got downloaded. That was the only way the techs were able to get the WMP11 uninstalled.
Try that and I wish you good-luck!! Hope this helps. Have them help you reinstall the MEDIA PLAYER 9 though before they quit helping you. You shouldn't have to pay for the help as I don't believe this was your fault at all. Again, good-luck! images/shocked.gif

I had to download the same software to reinstall onto it and reformat it to make version 11 even recognize it. Great. Problem averted. Except that version 11 won't validate half my music. It will play it, but it will not allow me to synch it because it says that there is no license info, even though when you go to the license tab it says I have unlimited freedom to burn, play, or synch the music. Same music synched fine before. I hate version 11. What a headache.

People are stupid sometimes.

Learn to use it properly before whining, it isn't that hard to change the look back to the text only listing interface, sheesh.

I can't seem to drag files to other folders in this version, ie. to change the genre, etc. No new visualisations either. I must admit that I do like the new look, but looks aren't everything... in fact, looks are nothing when it comes to music!!

I use XP home edition and I have a huge problem with WMP 11 skipping every second song. When one song ends, the next song is temporarily marked for a second, then the next one is marked and starts to play.

It's a pure hell to organize the music library in WMP 11. Nothing works as I'd like it to (WMP 10 was really good regarding this). I struggled for several hours one day to organize my library of about 6000 songs. After that I noticed the song skipping phenomenon. images/angry.gif

I'm switching back to version 10 now. There was some really nice features in v11 that I will miss, but I happily sacrifice these in order to have a version that is working. images/undecided.gif

how do you erase already burnt cd's???
written by Katherine on June 11, 2007

i know on the last wmp i had it let me erase the already burnt disc, so i could re-write over it...on wmp 11 it only lets me burn blank cd's. even if they've been burnt before you CAN'T erase and re-write over the old music- even if you do have a RW cd!(which i always use). this is really peevin me off coz i've had to buy heaps more cd's instead of just burning my old one's again and writing over them....like the 20 million other ppl have said...WINDOWS MEDIA PLAYER 11 IS SH**!!!!!!!! images/angry.gif

I am here to join the scores of people displeased with WMP 11. I also tried to get it off my pc and it would not go. damn. I was able to do most of what my mp3 player's manufacturer said in order to go back to Player 10, but the media format runtime file would not delete from programs.
I wonder if iTunes player will accept my mp3 if its not a Sony?

i like the alphabetical artist listings, makes it much easier to find albums but the only thing i hate is the fact that some albums are displayed in track order and some are all jumbled up even though theyre tagged properly..

Crap-Tastic
written by Unsatisfied Customer on July 15, 2007

Yeah, if you haven't gathered so already, WMP11 is shit! The library interface is crap with horrible sorting options, little grouping headers that you can't get rid of, now way to fast-foward or rewind videos, no song count, bad shuffle ability, only about 75% mp3 compatibility... overall, it is a huge waste of effort to try and use this thing. WMP10 had a very user-friendly interface and for anyone with a large collection, the text listing was very easy to use and being able to sort by artist without getting little headers or album art to take up way too much space, it was easy to find what you wanted. If I wanted crappy software I would actually use my Zune program for more than just adding mp3's to my player. I wanted an updated version of media player, I got... crap! Screw you microsoft and stop trying to "fix" what isn't broken!

Help

Downloaded wmp11 last night. Doesn't play a single DVD I own. What a shit program. Also my advice to everyone. DO NOT buy a Dell computer. I should have listened to my friends. Hardly anything works. I think I will throw the $2,500 piece of shit in the garbage and buy a real computer.

WMP 11 is great, except for synching to any device, which is *painfully* slow.
I can't believe this wasn't a priority - I have an 8GB zen and it took 5 hours to fill it up with songs! Definitely can't use this program until they fix this issue...

how do I get rid of old file names?

wmp11 sucks, now I use I tunes
written by billy on November 17, 2007

After a few months of wmp10 prompting me to upgrade I finally gave in and did it. Hmmm... it looks nice, but it's definitely not what I need. I like to be able to browse albums in list view aswell as my whole music collection, iTunes style. It doesn't show you how much music you have anymore either.

Not only that but I lost all of my personalised ratings for my songs which i used as playlists. THIS SUCKS!

Now I'm using iTunes.

Sync problem to my Sony s616F
written by Jonas Gutvik Korssjøen on February 3, 2008

ey! i just bought a sony s616F, and a cd with WMP 11 followed. I installed it and tried to wire up the mp3, but my comp just wouldnt recognize it. it just said "New device found", and nothing more. Tried to uninstall WMP 11, and then it all was fine. The thing is that WMP 11 should be the easiest way to sync my mp3 with my comp and shit, cause itunes and other doesnt find the device. So it seems that WMP 11 just is fucking it up, but it seems so weird. how can the player make the comp not recognize the device..? anyone knows how to figure this out..? i can manage to "drag-and-drop" my music over to the player now, but i cant make playlists and shit, as i should be able to do with WMP 11. thnx for all tips and help!

Hey Donuts

I've used WMP 8,9,10 & now 11. WMP 11 has all the features of all of them plus a few more. All you gotta do is figure out which button to push, or where to change it to list/details/thumbnail in the library pane...little icon next to search images/wink.gif...WMP 11 synchs great, once it's been set up correctly, never been a problem, burns a cd in about 3 minutes, rips em quicker.
Oh, i have a library of almost 20,000 songs,

Remember 99% of all computer problems are user created

WMP 11
written by anteffy on March 5, 2008

After installing the WMP 11 update, the computer told me I had to restart my computer and log in as an administrator. That's it. No further instructions as to what I had to do to get the program to function, and no help with Windows was forthcoming for clues either. WMP 11 wouldn't function unless I logged on as an administrator, but there were no options to work with. After weeks of not being able to use my WMP I uninstalled version 11. At least that one worked! images/undecided.gif

playlists and playcounts lost. and problem with synchronization. help?
written by Fazly on May 13, 2008

i use WMP 11. it's going all well, until, about 3 weeks ago, ALL my playlists suddenly lost, disappeared! (is this what the term "crash" means?)I've checked the folder in My Computer> My Documents> My Music> My Playlist. Luckily the lost playlists are saved there. somehow i managed to "put" back the playlists in WMP 11. but as you'd've guessed, ALL the playcounts had turned back to zero. =(

I have an mp4-player (creative ZEN) that i usually sync with WMP 11. after the incident, it won't sync properly..
now, if my playcount of a song in the mp4 player adds from 5 to 7 for example, after sync, the playcount in WMP 11 would just stay 5.
i enjoy the identical playcounts of both WMP 11 and my mp4 player. but now, they are two different things.. =(

so my questions:
1) can i retrieve back the lost playcounts in WMP 11? how?
2) the synchronization of the playcounts btwn WMP 11 and my player. how do i fix it?

Its pointless
written by Chaz on May 30, 2008

It was a good program for so long untill they did all this new crap to it now its just to buggy. I cant even burn a cd using media player becuase it will litteraly only burn half the list even if its easily under 60 minutes of music. It will only burn half the list and then say their was an error with the rest of the songs... an error which it wont share with you. I hate this program. What a waist of blanks.

Disable?

Is there a way to disable Media Player 11's Device Sync completely on Windows Vista? I have several USB devices and I format my computer often and it is sickening having to plug up each device and configure it! Stupid that it changes my screen in the middle of a video even when I click cancel button. Can't find answer to this on google--ticking me off.
