More and more consumers are looking to purchase high-quality inkjet photo printers to print their pictures that they took with their digital camera. Since today's digital cameras take such high-quality pictures, it's essential to have a high-quality printer that can print them with the best quality and detail possible. HP's Photosmart line of printers have earned an excellent reputation
for some very good consumer-grade photo printers.

Most of today's inkjet printers can only handle a maximum paper size of 8.5 x 14 inches, but the HP Photosmart 8750 can take up to 13 x 19 inches. The whole device measures about 10 x 25 x 24 inches, which is on the large side for a consumer photo inkjet printer, but it still looks awesome despite its bulky size. The outside paneling of the HP 8750 is the usual gray color that sports a flip-up LCD panel on the top, tons of memory card slots (CompactFlash I/II, SD/MMC, Memory Stick, and xD-Picture cards), and a PictBridge connector for digital cameras. The HP 8750 printer takes three cartridges with six to nine ink colors, all depending on which ones you choose to use. Right
out of the box, it comes with a tricolor cartridge with cyan, yellow, and magenta; a photo gray cartridge with three shades of gray; and what HP calls a blue photo cartridge, with light cyan, light magenta, and blue. All of these cartridges total nine colors, which is a much wider spectrum than other comparable photo printers. The one bad side of the nine cartridges that HP offers for this printer is that the colors do not have their own dedicated separate cartridge, meaning that if one
of the colors runs out of the three possible in one cartridge, you have to throw out the whole thing.

The HP 8750 includes a built-in print server (Ethernet port on back) and offers lots of image control settings and options, and as we said earlier, the ability to print onto paper as large as 13 x 19. You cannot, however, use roll paper or print directly onto CD's like you can with other consumer/professional inkjet printers.

In terms of photo quality for the HP Photosmart 8750, it did exceptionally good in testing. The
8750 enhances the blue gamut by devoting one of the three cartridges to blue hues. This allows it
to really enhance blue tones in an image to an amazing degree, which in turn means that the 8750 can print excellent images of the sky, clouds, and water. For black-and-white printing, the 8750 performed excellent when printing text. In fact, the text printing was the best that we've ever seen from an inkjet printer. The printer can be a little slow as well when printing, but you can't beat its quality. One note about photo prints from the 8750, the inks are very water-based, meaning that if you touch them with a wet finger or something drips on them, the ink will noticeably smear. HP says that prints from the 8750 can last 100 years in glass and over 200 years in a photo book.

In conclusion, the HP Photosmart 8750 is definitely our new inkjet photo printer of choice, which is why it earns our editors' choice award. It offers quality like no other inkjet photo printer on the market today. You get lots of connectivity options as well as many image controls and tons of possible color combinations with all of the ink cartridges. The HP 8750 is clearly for anyone who wants a very high-quality inkjet photo printer to print their high-quality digital images.

Bottom Line

Pros: Accepts paper up to 13 x 19, very high-quality prints, memory card and PictBridge compatible, built-in print server
Cons: Can be a little slow when printing, ink is not water resistant, uses tricolor ink tanks instead
of individual ink tanks
Editors' Rating: 4.5 Out of 5
