Review

Homework can be a pain and difficult and that's why Microsoft came up with this new product, called Microsoft Student. By the time that teens are in high school and college, many parents can't really help them because they don't remember that material. Microsoft Student 2006 productivity software offers lots of useful features, homework help for many subjects, and multimedia add-ons, including music, artwork, and access to live radio and news, all at a very affordable price. We did the homework for you in this review to tell you all about Microsoft Student 2006.

The main component of Student 2006 is additions to Microsoft's Office 2003 suite. This feature
adds tutorials, toolbars, and templates to Microsoft Office's Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. The tutorials are very easy to follow and understand and they include helpful ways for students to
being essays, reports, oral presentations, and more. For students taking foreign language classes, Student 2006 contains verb conjugations, spell-check, and translation tools for Spanish, German, Italian, and French.

Microsoft Student 2006 also comes with the full version of Microsoft Encarta Premium
encyclopedia and a limited-trial of Encarta online. Students can access their textbook online (most major school textbook publishers are available) and receive step-by-step tutorials, hints, and strategies for solving math problems in four categories: basic math, geometry, algebra, and advanced algebra. Also included is a software graphing calculator that allows students to
customize it to their needs, such as hiding unused buttons, store/change variables, and decimal-fraction conversions.

One problem that plagues today's teens is that they have a hard time finding reliable information on the Internet about the topic that they are researching. To help with finding reliable sources, Microsoft Encarta provides links to over 70,000 trusted Encarta resources with excellent articles and information online.

One downside is that you already have to have either Office 2003 or Office XP to use Microsoft Student 2006 since it modifies many of Office's productivity applications. So this means that if you don't already have the Microsoft Office suite, you have to pay for that too, which is another $100-$200. Also, an Internet connection (dial-up or broadband) is required for some of Student 2006's tools.

In the end, Microsoft Student 2006 is a superb program that offers lots of very useful tools and information to students using it for their studies. Every student that has this program is sure to enjoy using it because it takes a lot of stress and pressure off of preparing projects and essays for school and their grades will probably show that too. We recommend that if you already have Office 2003 or XP, this is an excellent program to get, but if you don't have a version of Office, you may want to hold off if you don't want to spend the extra money.

Bottom Line

Pros: Easy to use, Encarta encyclopedia included, seamless integration with Office, very valuable database of reliable sources
Cons: Encarta Online subscription is only a trial, expensive if you don't already own Office XP or 2003
Editors' Rating: 4.5 Out of 5
