In a surprise move by Adobe, they have released a free public beta of its new Photoshop CS3. Photoshop is regarded as the standard in the graphics industry. Anyone who has a Photoshop CS2 serial number can download the beta for free from Adobe.com. Perhaps the free beta is due to the transition that both Windows and the Mac operating system are currently undergoing. With Windows Vista making its debut and the new Mac OS not far away, this will give Adobe a broad range of beta testers to help iron out all the kinks of the program before its retail launch.

The beta runs natively on Windows XP/Vista as well as Intel-based Macs. Adobe has announced a release date for the entire Creative Suite 3 to be in the Spring. Therefore, the Photoshop CS3 beta includes all the final features that will be included in the retail release.

Over the years, professional users of Adobe Photoshop have complained that Photoshop's image filters have been very destructive, meaning that once the image modification was done and saved, there was no way to undo it. Well Adobe has finally listened and has included what it calls "smart filters" in CS3. The new filters are used in a similar manner to how layers are used. When a filter is used (for example, a blur), it goes right into its own layer in the layers pallet. From ther you can turn it off and on as your will, even if you save and close the file.

The new smart filters allow for non-destructive image editing that allow you to always undo any image edits.

Adobe has also revamped the user interface in Photoshop CS3. The new interface will be Vista Aero compatable. There are also new pallet display options in CS3 as well. You can see abbreviated pallets that only show the most often used tools as well as semi-collapsed pallets that expand vertically to give you the most amount of screen real estate to work in.

There is also a redesigned print dialog box that combines the best of the regular print dialog and the print preview dialog from Photoshop CS2. In the new combined print dialog box, you can view a preview on the left side of the dialog as well on edit many print options on the right side.

The new print dialog box includes many more printing options as well as a live print preview.

Adobe has included many more new features and image editing options and we certainly have not explained them all here, we have simply skimmed the surface. For that reason, we highly encourage you to download the Photoshop CS3 beta to discover all the features yourself. After all, the best way to learn something is to just play around with it.
